Neuroscience of Music

Music is an outcome of human delighting in the creation and perception of patterned auditory environments. Thirty years of research on the cognitive neuroscience of music have shown that all of the brain's major systems that support perception, action, memory, attention, and emotion, are engaged as a function of specific musical behaviors and experiences. Examining some of these phenomena in depth, such as the orienting of attention within a musical scene, having music playing in one's head, or experiencing music-evoked memories and emotions, I hope to show that music and musical-related behaviors serve as a model system for studying and understanding the functional organization of the human brain.
